hiking and exploring mountain cam
An Giang Province, located in the Mekong Delta region between the Tien and Hau rivers, is home to a mountain range known to locals as That Son. The collection of peaks includes Mt. Tra Su, Mt. Ba Doi Om, Mt. Co To, Mt. Dai and Mt. Tuong. The tallest of the bunch is Thien Cam or Mt. Cam, which stands at 710m.
The Vietnamese and the Khmer live at the base of That Son, which also has a few fish sauce factories.
The area of That Son located near the Cambodia border has fields of palm trees specific to the region. The tall palm trees with shaggy leaves spawn slightly sweet fruits that are used to make sugar. On the way to Mt. Cam, visitors can drink a glass of palm water in one of the small shops.
The road to Mt. Cam is a challenge for one’s skills, sprit and health. Those heading up the mountain either hire a motorbike taxi for VND70,000 or hike through the jungle. All along the path to the summit, palm water, incense and food are available for sale. After cresting an abrupt slope, the marshy and pot-hole-ridden road leads to the top of the mountain. In the afternoon, the sun shines dark red behind Bo Hong Peak, the tallest point on Mt. Cam.
In addition to an unparalleled view, Mt. Cam also has a number of pagodas worth seeing. Van Linh Tu Pagoda climbs seven floors and is especially beautiful with the forest and mountain in the background. Van Linh Tu Pagoda has a roof that curves like a lotus flower similar to Dai Thua pagoda; a 32m tall, smiling Buddha statue stands opposite of the pagoda.
